Use case on computational fluid dynamics
Computational fluid dynamics is an integral part of aerospace research and enables applications in many disciplines.

We present the first observation of turbulent fluid dynamics captured using variational methods on quantum hardware. Our findings highlight the power of all-to-all connectivity of AQT’s trapped-ion quantum technology approach compared to the best superconducting devices available.
We are able to simulate two time steps of turbulent flow with high fidelity, precisely capturing the underlying physics using Burger’s equation. An almost fivefold reduction of the necessary two qubit gates compared to superconducting qubits nicely demonstrates the power of all-to-all connectivity of our trapped-ion device.
